What should you do first?
Blot the wine immediately using clean white kitchen paper or a white absorbent towel. Work gently from the outside of the spill towards the centre. Do not rub, scrub or soak the rug.
Why Does Red Wine Stain Rugs?
Red wine contains strongly coloured natural pigments, tannins, acids and sugars. Once the liquid enters the rug’s pile, these components begin attaching themselves to the fibres.
Act as quickly as possible
Use clean white kitchen paper or a white
absorbent towel to blot the spill. Place the
towel over the wine and apply gentle,
even pressure. Replace it as it becomes
saturated and continue until little wine
transfers onto the towel.
Blot from the outside towards the centre
Work around the outside edge of the spill
before moving towards the middle. This helps
reduce the risk of spreading the stain into
unaffected fibres.
Use a very small amount of cold water
For a colourfast synthetic rug, lightly
dampen a clean white cloth with cold water
and gently blot the affected area. Do not
pour water directly onto the rug and do not
soak the pile.
Remove as much moisture as possible
Place a fresh dry towel over the damp area
and press gently to absorb the remaining
moisture. Repeat using dry sections of the
towel.
Allow the rug to dry naturally
Leave the rug to dry in a well-ventilated
room. Avoid direct heat, radiators,
hairdryers and very strong sunlight, as
these may affect the fibres or leave a
visible tide mark.
What not to do
Do not scrub
Scrubbing spreads the liquid and can damage or
distort the rug pile.
Do not use hot water
Heat can contribute to setting the stain and may
affect sensitive fibres.
Do not pour on salt
Salt may become lodged in the fibres and is
difficult to remove completely.
Do not use bleach
Bleach can permanently remove colour and weaken
natural rug fibres.
Do not use washing powder
It can leave a sticky residue that attracts further
soiling.
Do not use a steam cleaner
Heat and excessive moisture may set the stain,
cause dye movement or damage the rug’s foundation.

but it can become trapped in a rug’s pile and

not recommend using it on valuable or delicate

wool, silk, viscose, handmade or naturally dyed
