How to remove coffee from a rug

What to do — step by step
Coffee contains natural pigments and tannins that can quickly penetrate rug fibres. Coffee containing milk, cream or sugar may also leave behind fats, proteins and sticky residues, making prompt and careful treatment especially important.

Act as quickly as possible
Place clean white kitchen paper or a white absorbent towel over the spill. Apply gentle, even pressure to absorb as much coffee as possible.

Blot — never rub
Continue blotting with fresh sections of the towel until very little coffee transfers onto it. Rubbing can spread the stain, push it deeper into the pile and distort the rug fibres.

Work from the outside towards the centre
Begin at the outer edge of the spill and gradually work towards the middle. This helps prevent the coffee from spreading into unaffected areas.

Use a very small amount of cold water
If the rug is a colourfast synthetic rug, lightly dampen a clean white cloth with cold water and gently blot the affected area. Never pour water directly onto the rug or soak the pile.

Remove as much moisture as possible
Place a fresh, dry towel over the damp area and press gently. Repeat using dry sections of the towel until you have removed as much moisture as possible.

Allow the rug to dry naturally
Leave the rug to dry in a well-ventilated room. Avoid direct heat, radiators, hairdryers and strong sunlight, as these may affect the fibres or leave a visible tide mark.

Do not scrub
Scrubbing can spread the coffee, damage the fibres and permanently distort the rug’s pile.
Do not use hot water
Heat can make certain parts of the stain more difficult to remove, particularly when the coffee contains milk or cream.
Do not use washing-up liquid
Washing-up liquid can produce excessive foam and leave behind a sticky residue that attracts further dirt.
Do not use bleach
Bleach can permanently remove colour, weaken natural fibres and leave an area looking lighter than the rest of the rug.
Do not use washing powder
Washing powder can become trapped within the pile and leave a difficult-to-remove residue.
Do not use a steam cleaner
Heat and excessive moisture can spread the stain, cause colours to run or damage the rug’s foundation.
A note on different rug types
Wool
Wool is highly absorbent and can hold a considerable amount of liquid. Strong detergents, scrubbing and over-wetting may alter the texture, colour and appearance of the pile.
Persian & Oriental
Traditional dyes may move or bleed when wet. Blot the spill only, avoid applying cleaning products and seek specialist advice before attempting further treatment.
Silk
Silk is extremely sensitive to moisture, rubbing and cleaning chemicals. Carefully blot the liquid without applying water or stain remover, then contact a rug-cleaning specialist.
Frequently asked questions
Can coffee be completely removed from a rug?
In many cases, yes—especially when the spill is treated quickly and correctly. Older stains or marks previously treated with unsuitable products can be more difficult, but professional cleaning may still achieve a significant improvement.
Does it matter if the coffee contained milk or sugar?
Yes. Milk or cream introduces proteins and fats, while sugar can leave a sticky residue that attracts dirt. These spills may require specialist treatment even when the visible brown mark appears to have disappeared.
Should I use bicarbonate of soda on a coffee stain?
We do not recommend it. The powder can become lodged deep within the rug’s pile and may be difficult to remove completely, particularly from thick wool rugs.
Can I use white vinegar to remove coffee?
Using vinegar on a rug carries a risk of affecting dyes, damaging sensitive fibres or leaving an unpleasant residue. It is safest to blot the spill and seek specialist advice before applying any cleaning solution.
Can I use a supermarket carpet stain remover?
Products intended for synthetic fitted carpets may not be safe for wool, silk, Persian or Oriental rugs. They can cause colour loss, leave residue or permanently alter the texture of the pile.
Will professional cleaning remove an old coffee stain?
Often, yes. The likely result depends on the rug’s fibres, dye stability, the contents of the coffee and any products already applied. Specialist cleaning gives an older stain the best possible chance of removal.
